On July 6, 1944, a fire broke out during a Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus performance in Hartford, Connecticut. The big top tent, treated with a waterproofing mixture of paraffin and gasoline, ignited rapidly. With an audience of roughly 7,000 — many of them children — the blaze killed 167 people, two-thirds of whom were children, and injured hundreds more. This remains one of the deadliest fires in American history. Learn more at connecticuthistory.org.
